What’s so special about the Amalfi Coast?

The Amalfi Coast is famous for its sweeping views, with cliffside towns cascading towards the azure sea, dotted with lemon groves and terraces. According to Maxine, ‘The scenery is, of course, mesmerising – a UNESCO World Heritage site famed for its steep cliffs and Mediterranean beauty – but it’s the character of each town, the hidden beaches and the locals’ love for good food and hospitality that make it such a captivating holiday destination.’

Where do you fly into?

Naples International Airport is around a 1.5-hour drive to the main towns and we can arrange private airport transfers to make getting to your hotel hassle-free. Maxine adds that the train from Naples to Sorrento is an affordable option, offering beautiful views along the way.

What’s the most beautiful town on the Amalfi Coast?

Each expert has a favourite. Michelle is drawn to Amalfi for its timeless Italian appeal and historic architecture. She says, ‘Amalfi has it all – hypnotic sea views, an awe-inspiring cathedral and that unmistakable Italian vibe.’ Meanwhile, Sue fell in love with Ravello, calling it ‘a jewel that feels like stepping into a painting.’ And then there’s Positano, with Maxine describing its bougainvillaea-lined streets, tucked-away art galleries and those iconic striped beach umbrellas as ‘pure coastal glamour’.

What’s the best month to visit?

Timing is key to enjoying the Amalfi Coast. While summer offers beach-perfect weather, April, June and September are ideal if you want relaxed sightseeing and more comfortable temperatures. According to Sue, ‘All of Italy's tourist hot spots are busy during the summer months. So, if you want the coast without the crowds, plan your visit for spring or autumn.’

How many days is enough?

Four to seven days is ideal, says Sue. ‘You’ll have time to see the main sights without feeling rushed.’ Maxine often stays for two weeks to fully unwind and enjoy the coast. She suggests pairing a few nights on the Amalfi Coast with a city break in Rome or a peaceful getaway to Ischia or Sorrento.

Is the Amalfi Coast expensive?

The Amalfi Coast can be pricey, especially in tourist hotspots. Maxine explains that Capri is the priciest, with five-star hotels, Michelin-starred restaurants and luxury shops aplenty. However, she advises, ‘You can still enjoy it on a budget by choosing local spots for food and drink.’

Do you need a car?

While hiring a car could seem practical, all three experts advise against it. Maxine warns, ‘The roads are narrow and windy and the driving can be a bit of a challenge – especially in summer.’ Instead, use the local ferries, buses and trains, which are reliable and cover the entire coast. A car-free Amalfi holiday allows you to enjoy the scenery without navigating the hairpin bends.

What is a good amount to budget per day?

Budgeting for the Amalfi Coast depends on your style of travel. For a more indulgent experience, plan for around €300–€400 per day to cover dining, activities and accommodation in upscale hotels. For more spend-savvy travellers, you can enjoy the coast on €100–€150 daily by opting for local restaurants, mid-range hotels and using public transport.

What’s the most famous food on the Amalfi Coast?

The Amalfi Coast celebrates simplicity in its cuisine, letting fresh, local ingredients shine. Michelle says, ‘Anything with locally grown tomatoes or lemons is delicious,’ while Sue recommends fresh seafood dishes or Neapolitan pizza paired with a glass of local white wine. And, of course, you can’t miss Tiramisu for dessert.

What drink is the Amalfi Coast known for?

Limoncello is synonymous with the Amalfi Coast. Made from sun-ripened lemons, this iconic drink is served chilled as an after-dinner treat. It’s so popular that you’ll find limoncello shops all along the coast, with some restaurants offering tastings as you walk by.

Maxine also recommends sampling the local wines, particularly Costa d’Amalfi DOC. ‘The Amalfi wines have a fresh, mineral quality, thanks to the coastal vineyards and volcanic soil. A glass of white from this region, paired with seafood, is a must,’ she adds.

Where are the best beaches?

Michelle suggests Marina Grande in Positano for its lively atmosphere, sun loungers and cliffside views. Sue’s favourite is Fiordo di Furore a dramatic inlet with a small beach tucked between towering rocks. Maxine also has a secret swim spot near Sorrento: Bagni della Regina Giovanna. ‘It’s a natural rock pool at Punto del Capo that you reach by an old rope bridge; it’s worth every step for an refreshing swim.’

What are the best activities to do in the area?

Michelle recommends trekking the famous Path of the Gods, a trail offering breathtaking views over the sea and cliffs below. Sue suggests not missing a day trip to Pompeii to walk among its ancient ruins, or taking a cruise over to Capri to discover hidden coves and lively piazzas. And for a quieter day, wander the storybook lanes of Ravello or visit the beautiful Villa Cimbrone gardens.

What are the best hotels to stay in?

Maxine suggests Luna Convento in Amalfi. ‘It’s set in a converted 13th-century monastery, with stunning views and an authentic sense of place’. Another standout in Amalfi is the Anantara Grand Hotel Convento di Amalfi. Michelle loves the dramatic setting, perched on a clifftop with sparkling sea views and a striking infinity pool.

For those who don’t mind staying nearby, Sue recommends the Hilton Sorrento Palace. ‘It’s got the coast’s biggest pool, spacious rooms with Bay of Naples views and it’s close to all the action’.
