Jetwing Saman Villas
Understated style, serenity and seclusion
With spectacular coastal views and Bawa-influenced architecture, this idyllic boutique beach resort is an effortlessly romantic hideaway.
When it first opened in the mid-1990s, Saman Villas was one of Sri Lanka’s first boutique hotels, if not the first. Almost 30 years later, the original design – inspired by traditional temple architecture – is more appealing than ever thanks to a string of sensitive upgrades ranging from ‘emotional lighting’ in the dining areas to the addition of a dreamy spa set among pools and greenery. From its elevated headland location, you can gaze left and right over almost-deserted horizon-breaking golden beaches, while the sleek infinity-edged pool seems to merge into the Indian Ocean. Its gloriously tranquil atmosphere – reinforced by the lack of young children – has long made it a favourite for honeymooners and couples looking for an indulgent and grown-up escape.
Why we love Jetwing Saman Villas
-
Its clifftop setting is sublime, with sandy beaches stretching away on either side and the ever-changing blues of the Indian Ocean in front.
-
You can feel yourself relax the instant you cross the over-water boardwalk into the spa, and the treatments will leave you floating.
-
Service is warm and attentive without being obtrusive; you'll really welcome here
-
It’s a paradise for water babies, with pools in many of the suites and a jaw-dropping main infinity pool overlooking the sea.
Rooms
The 26 suites and two-storey villa have a soothing, airy feel, thanks in part to their generous proportions but also their now-classic tropical modernist design of pale walls, warm wood and splashes of art, not to mention the breathtaking ocean views. Even the lead-in Superior Suite has room for a good-sized indoor seating area and dressing room. The Deluxe Suite gives you all this along with a pint-sized garden off the bedroom where you can listen to birdsong and the splash of the water feature. For the pleasure of having your own small patch of blue, upgrade to a Deluxe Suite with Pool or the tucked-away Grand Deluxe with Pool. Largest of all, the Saman Villa Suite with Pool has a romantic open-air bathroom and lots of outdoor spaces in which to unwind. The upgrade from a Deluxe Suite to a Deluxe Suite with Pool is well worth the extra cost.
Facilities
With a comprehensive à la carte menu in the main restaurant, an inviting list of private dining options and 24-hour room service, there’s a pampering, tailor-made feel to mealtimes.
Fine Dining Restaurant
The open-sided restaurant has an enviable setting overlooking the sea and an all-day à la carte menu that includes international dishes and exquisite Sri Lankan options.
Romantic Dining
For a special occasion, you can arrange to dine in various Instagrammable settings, from a dramatic coastal platform to the serene pool pavilion overlooking the ocean.
If we had to choose, a curry-leaf mojito on the beach at sunset would be very high on our list of memorable experiences.

The intimate Sahan Spa, set in a beautifully landscaped water garden, is a retreat within a retreat. It offers superb signature treatments, including some for couples and for men, authentic Ayurveda therapies and a variety of deep-tissue and aromatherapy massages. Facilities include a Jacuzzi, sauna and floral bath. Along with a small gym, there is a cycle track and walking trail which takes you past temples, lakes and paddy fields.
Dive into the local culture, history and natural world with a menu of activities that includes a dawn visit to a typical bustling fish market, a wander around Galle’s iconic fort and whale-and-dolphin spotting trips in season (Nov-Apr). Other nearby must-sees include Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa’s idyllic country estate, his brother’s just as lovely tropical garden, and the highly regarded Turtle Conservation Project.
Deep-sea fishing trips are available on request.
Jetwing’s commitment to sustainability encompasses everything from working with only the most ethical companies on its wildlife activities to sourcing the ingredients for the restaurant and bar as locally as possible.
