Haritha Villas + Spa

Chic and leafy idyll

This secluded hillside boutique bolthole surrounded by nature offers an away-from-it-all atmosphere and exceptional customised service

There’s lush greenery in every direction at this luxurious and romantic hideaway in the hills above Hikkaduwa, from the dense tree canopy where monkeys chatter to the paddy fields and tea plantations stretched out below. At the top of the site sit two immaculately restored traditional-style villas, but the structures on the steep slope beneath them are what catch the eye. Set half into the hillside, there are seven strikingly minimalist villas whose design blurs the boundaries between inside and out. Here you can wake up to a dip in your private pool and the cries of peacocks, savour the sunset with a cocktail brought by your butler and dine al fresco on dishes created just for you. If you can tear yourself away, there’s a sleek restaurant next to the main infinity pool, a blissful spa with life-enhancing therapies and tuk-tuk transfers to a private section of beach just five minutes away.

Why we love Haritha Villas + Spa

  • There’s a customised approach to everything from mealtimes and menus to the imaginative range of tours and experiences

  • You don’t have to be an architecture buff to appreciate the artistry of the design and the clever touches that help it melt into the landscape

Almost completely hidden by greenery, the Haritha Spa takes a holistic approach to wellness that includes a consultation with the resident Ayurvedic doctor. Treatments, based on natural products, range from signature Ceylon tea wraps to scented herbal baths, some designed for couples. Other facilities include a Vichy shower, steam bath, sauna and Jacuzzi. There’s a dedicated pavilion for morning yoga overlooking the lake, or you can join a meditation session at the local monastery. The small but well-equipped gym is open around the clock, or you may prefer a trek through the UNESCO-listed Sinharaja rainforest for a dose of wildlife with your workout.

With the help of your butler, you can select from customisable experiences that cover the ground from whale-watching (in season) and moonstone mining to tea-plantation tours and boat safaris on the Madhu River. With Galle such a short distance away, you can also arrange a stress-free visit tailored to your tastes and interests.

The resort’s own slice of Narigama Beach is a short (free) tuk-tuk ride away, while livelier Hikkaduwa Beach is about the same distance. A nearby PADI dive centre offers excursions to qualified divers, or you can book a session with a certified surfing coach (Jan-Apr), head out for a spot of deep-sea fishing or learn the secrets of traditional stilt fishing.

Sustainability was a consideration at Haritha from the beginning. The buildings were constructed using local materials and non-toxic paints, sited to minimise their impact on the landscape and planted with green roofs. There’s an organic garden, which supplies ingredients not only for the restaurant but for the spa, which uses 100% natural products.
