Shangri-La Hambantota

A seaside oasis

Sri Lanka’s first Shangri-La resort brings a slice of Asian-inspired luxury to the island’s south coast.

The breathtaking Shangri-La Hambantota has brought all of the hallmarks of Shangri-La – exemplary service, a modern design, the signature CHI spa and innovative dining options – to the shores of Sri Lanka. Set in 53 acres, the resort sits on a long stretch of beach and has a wide range of facilities including The Village, an artisan centre where you can browse and buy locally created arts and crafts. The resort is also one of the first on the island to have its very own golf course, the beautifully designed Rodney Wright 18-hole course, perfect if you are looking to enjoy a round or two during your holiday. Younger guests are well catered for with the Cool Zone Kids' Club, as well as a wide selection of facilities you can enjoy together as a family such as a flying trapeze (with a trainer on hand to guide you) and a water park with slides and water features.

Why we love Shangri-La Hambantota

  • There’s an incredible range of facilities, from treetop ropeways and a waterpark to an artisan village filled with local crafts

  • Golfers will appreciate the resort’s exquisite 18-hole golf course, designed by one of the world’s leading golf architects

  • At the fabulous CHI Ayurveda Spa, you can experience ancient healing therapies in a blissfully tranquil setting

  • Eating here is a joy, whether you’re sampling stylish South East Asian street food for dinner or posh pub grub at the golf club

With two restaurants and two bars, eating well here is never going to be an issue. For a special occasion, you can enjoy tailor-made dining experiences in beautiful settings throughout the resort.

Bojunhala
The main restaurant, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, offers an appealing mix of Sri Lankan and international cuisine. Sit inside to watch your dishes.

Sera
Dishes from Asia, from Malaysian sambals to Chinese delicacies – all are created with locally sourced ingredients – and the focus at the fine-dining restaurant Sera.

Gimanhala Lounge
At this delightfully casual open-air venue close to the lobby, you can enjoy afternoon tea, a cocktail or glass of Champagne at sundown and a post-dinner drink.

Ulpatha Club House & Bar
Doubling as the 19th green of the golf course, this airy eatery offers modern European ‘gastro-pub’ cuisine and an excellent choice of beers and wines.

The offerings at the dinner-only restaurant Sera are inspired by South-East Asia’s hawker stalls, and there’s a real feeling of authenticity about the whole experience.

A staple of Shangri-La resorts around the world is CHI, The Spa. At Shangri-La Hambantota, the spa is located in a secluded spot and features beautiful local design touches. Both Chinese and Ayurvedic treatments and therapies are offered here and all products used are completely natural. Outdoor yoga sessions are held every morning.

The sleek Health Club has a full complement of state-of-the-art equipment, from cross-trainers and step machines to free weights and more. Outside, the options include jogging trails and beach walks, bike rides and cricket, football and volleyball on the beach. Too sedate? There’s also a treetop ropes course and a seven-metre-high trapeze for thrill seekers.

Elephant sculptures made from rubbish are the focus of the resort’s Elephant R.U.N. (Reuse + Upcycle = New Art) prize. There are regular reef cleans to remove discarded fishing gear that can harm the coral and endanger marine and bird life.

In line with Shangri-La’s Rooted in Nature initiative, the kitchens use as much locally sourced produce as possible. The Village, which showcases the work of local craftspeople, is an excellent example of practical community support

With a waterpark, a dedicated zone in the restaurant, and lots of things to do outside together, this is a fabulously family-friendly resort.

The Cool Zone Kids’ Club offers an inspiring range of supervised activities for 4 to 12-year-olds, from crafts to games and themed adventures.

Alongside supervised activities that are on offer at the The Cool Zone Kids' Club, there are plenty of facilities that families can enjoy together such as drone flying area, a seven-metre high trapeze and a waterpark.

Shangri-La Hambantota also has an 18-hole golf course, the first of its kind in Sri Lanka. The setting is spectacular, with a backdrop of greenery, lakes and the beautiful Indian Ocean. As you tee off, you may even spot some of the local wildlife.

Compulsory New Year's Eve gala dinner, supplement applies.
