With its jaw-dropping views, exceptional service and lavish suites and villas, this exclusive resort is redefining luxury on the south coast.
You’ll feel yourself switch into relaxation mode as soon as you arrive at this luxurious resort, catch sight of the spectacular views and take your first breath of fresh sea air. The gentle curve of the 60-metre-long infinity pool draws your gaze to the crashing surf beyond and showcases the breathtaking 270-degree coastal views – it’s no wonder it was voted one of ‘The 10 Best Infinity Pools in the World’ by Condé Nast Traveler. With in-room dining and spa treatments on offer, it would be easy to cocoon yourself in your residence-style suite or villa but there are plenty of activities to lure you from your luxurious sanctuary.
Why we love Cape Weligama
-
This boutique hotel’s setting, on a headland that affords breathtaking sea views on three sides, is wonderfully dramatic
-
It’s a member of Relais & Chateaux – one of three in Sri Lanka – known for its authentic, independent luxury properties
-
If you can tear yourself away from the award-winning infinity pool, it’s a superb base for exploring nearby Galle
-
The imaginative experiences range from tea-estate tours and cocktail making to whale safaris and junior chef lessons
Rooms
The 39 suites and villas are lavishly spacious with super-chic interiors and a steam room. The Suites are set in two-storey villas around the Cove Pool and are perfect for families or groups. The terracotta-topped villas are scattered in twos or threes, share a 15-metre infinity pool and have incredible sea views. Touted as Sri Lanka’s most luxurious pool villa, the Cape Villa Two Bedroom Duplex is just a two-minute walk from the beach and boasts 310m2 of living space and a private pool.
The Ocean Villa may be the lead-in villa category, but it still offers plenty of space and amenities – including a rollaway bed for a child.
Facilities
There are two restaurants and two bars, plus the option of in-villa meals and an array of private experiences from village-style breakfasts to candlelit clifftop dinners for two.
Ocean Terrace\ At the resort's all-day dining venue, Sri Lankan and western dishes are accompanied by beautiful views of the sea. Expect exceptional service and innovative dishes created using locally sourced ingredients
Tableau
In a dramatic setting at the cliff edge, this intimate evening-only venue provides a chef’s table experience. The ever-changing menu features seasonal and sustainable ingredients prepared in front of you by local and visiting stars of the culinary world.
The Surf Bar
Open from 10.30am to midnight, the breezy bar is a fantastic spot for anything from a pot of something from the extensive tea menu, a tea-infused cocktail and canapés at sunset or a post-dinner digestive under the stars.
Cove Beach Club
Next to the Cove Pool, this small bar is open during the day for drinks and snacks.

In the Sanctuary Spa’s four elegant and restful treatment rooms, the list of inviting therapies focuses on natural, organic and stress-relieving ingredients. Try a scented body scrub made from Sri Lankan spices, sandalwood and sweet orange, followed by an aromatherapy massage featuring Ceylon tea, known for its anti-ageing properties. Alternatively, the therapists can create a spa experience for you in your suite or villa.
Yoga and meditation classes take place in quiet corners of the 12-acre gardens.
The fitness centre, under the Moon Pool, is equipped with Cybex equipment including total body cross trainers, recumbent and upright bikes, treadmills and multigym. If you’d rather pedal through the local countryside, cycle tours can be arranged.
The buggies used by guests to travel around the 12-acre site were chosen to be as energy efficient as possible. There are collection units along the beach for plastic waste, which is then transformed into cleaning brushes and clothing. The resort’s MJF Charitable Foundation Centre runs several projects to support the local fishing communities. Cape Weligama’s butterfly garden, which is filled with native plants, is also home to a collection of beehives.
Family-friendly facilities include a kids’ pool, babysitting service and plenty of activities to keep children entertained.
Minimum stay: 4 nights 20 Dec-10 Jan.
Due to its hilly setting and steep steps, the resort is not suitable for guests with mobility difficulties.
