Hike Pidurangala Rock
Climbing Sigiriya Rock is a Sri Lanka rite of passage, however, as with scaling any iconic viewpoint – once you’ve reached the top, it’s not part of the landscape that you’re viewing. The almost-200-metre-high Pidurangala Rock lies just to the north of its more famous neighbour and has some pretty epic views from its summit (which, like Lion Rock, is reached by man-made paths and staircases). The best times to climb are sunrise and sunset when the shifting light casts dramatic shadows across the landscape, and – if you are lucky – creates dramatic skies of many colours.

Village Cooking Experience
The cuisine of Sri Lanka has been shaped over centuries, influenced by Arab traders and European settlers, and trying the spice-enriched specialities – whether from a high-end restaurant or a street hawker – is a staple experience during a visit to the island. To really enhance your time here, we recommend learning how to create a handful of dishes in a local village. You’ll buy your produce from a village vendor in the company of your host; they’ll show you the essential ingredients used in traditional cooking and select the freshest vegetables that will be used to create their culinary masterpieces. In a wattle-and-daub hut that’s surrounded by paddy fields, your host will whip up a range of flavourful and authentic curries that you’ll get to enjoy at the end of the morning.

Where are Habarana, Sigiriya & Dambulla?
North of Kandy, Habarana, Sigiriya and Dambulla sit within the Cultural Triangle deep in the middle of Sri Lanka. All are convenient bases for seeing the sights. Dambulla is found at the junction of the Colombo–Trincomalee and Kandy–Anuradhapura roads and is famed for its extraordinary ancient cave temples. Drive 30 minutes northeast to reach Sigiriya, home to the mighty Sigiriya Fortress (Lion Rock). From Sigiriya, it’s a 25-minute drive to Habarana, which sits in the district of Anuradhapura.
Sigiriya Rock Fifth-Century King Kasyapa built his battlefield and palace on sky-high Sigiriya Rock. Defeated in 495, the citadel became a Buddhist monastery in the 6th century before it was abandoned. Today, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic images. Climb towards the top, (some 1,200 steps) for the remains of water gardens, terraced landscapes, colourful frescoes and the famous Mirror Wall and Lion Paws. The summit rewards you with upper palace ruins and take-your-breath-away views of the jungle plains.

The elaborate hand carved UNESCO-listed Dambulla Rock Temples date back to 2nd century B.C. and sit at the base of a 150 metre rock. A massive complex that’s been a pilgrimage site for over 22 centuries, it’s made up of five different temples covered in intricate murals and filled with over 150 Buddha statues. The grandest cave is the second one, known as Cave of the Great Kings. The Rock Temples is one of Sri-Lanka's most well-preserved prehistoric sites and is still a working monastery.
Habarana
Pretty much equidistant between Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura, Habarana is gateway to a world of wildlife in Minneriya and Kaudulla National Parks. Our Habarana hotels sit in excellent locations on the shores of the lake, within easy reach of all the main attractions in the Cultural Triangle. The interlinking national parks are famous for elephant sightings, and the annual dry season migration is one of the largest elephant gatherings in South Asia.
Getting around
Habarana, Sigiriya & Dambulla are great destinations to add to a tailormade Sri Lanka itinerary, with all the main sights of the Cultural Triangle within an hour and a half of our handpicked hotels. We recommend basing yourself at one hotel and hiring a car and private driver who will be with you for your entire trip. Sri Lanka’s infrastructure can be uneven in places and having a driver allows you to explore in comfort, take in the scenery and spend time with someone who knows the country and its history intimately. Our holidays are tailormade: you choose how long you want to spend here before moving on to your next destination, whether that’s Hill Country, east coast beaches or over to the Maldives for white sands and blue lagoons.
