A contemporary and luxurious retreat overlooking idyllic Passikudah Bay, ideal for snorkelling and diving.
Uga Bay has an enviable position right in the middle of a stunning stretch of sand and it has fantastic views out over the hotel’s palm-fringed garden and the bay. Not only does this make Uga Bay ideal for those looking to relax on a pristine beach, it’s also perfect for watersports enthusiasts, with a selection of activities available seasonally. As the bay is protected, swimming and snorkelling are very popular, and as it is shallow for a long way out it’s great for families too. Deeper into the bay is where divers explore wrecks and reefs.
Why we love Uga Bay
-
It’s on Passikudah beach, a picture-perfect sweep of sand backed by palm trees and lapped by crystal-clear turquoise waters
-
There are views of the ocean from every stylishly decorated and generously proportioned studio, suite and villa
-
Forget about rigid mealtimes – at the resort’s restaurant, you can eat when you’re hungry rather than to someone else’s timetable
-
Combine a few relaxed days here with a tour of the Cultural Triangle for a memorable Sri Lankan experience
This resort has earned internationally recognised certification that conform to standards set by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.
Rooms
The 48 rooms and villas are decorated in a modern tropical style with dark wood, pale walls and splashes of sea blue and ochre. We recommend choosing a Beach Studio if you love to walk straight out on to the beach. Above these are the Ocean Studios which all have balconies with views out over the palm-lined beach (views of the sea are obstructed by the palm trees). For a real treat, you could upgrade to either a two-bedroom Bay Suite which features a private pool, or the two-bedroom, two-storey Beach Villa.
For watersports-loving couples, the Beach Studios are close to the beach and the shallow water of the bay with the reefs beyond.
Facilities
Uga Bay has a good reputation when it comes to food, though there’s just one restaurant, and you can also choose from a range of private dining locations.
Restaurant
At Uga Bay’s all-day restaurant, mealtimes are flexible, as is the menu, with a selection of Sri Lankan specialities and international favourites based on seasonal produce and whatever the local fishermen have caught that day.
Don’t miss the candlelit ‘sand dining’ private experience, where you dine under the stars at a table and chairs made almost entirely from sand.
Whats Included
Breakfast in the restaurant.

The unusual underground spa has sea views and provides a selection of massages, scrubs, wraps and facials. The small gym has a selection of cardio machines.
Uga Bay can organise trips for experienced divers to the nearby wreck of the HMS Hermes, one of the region’s most exciting scuba diving locations.
Various watersports are available at the beach, including jet skis, windsurfing, kayaking and snorkelling.
All the seafood is sourced from local fishermen, helping to support the community and cut food miles. Staff receive sustainability training, including in the principle of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and are free to make improvements. The bathroom amenities in the guest rooms are in refillable containers, reducing the use of plastic. The hotel sponsors a range of community projects, from beach cleans and tree planting to meals for deprived children. Uga Bay is a Travelife certified property.
The beach is great for children and the two-bedroom villas have private pools, but there are no special facilities for under 18s.
Compulsory Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve gala dinners, supplements apply.
