One of the first resorts to be built on Passikudah Bay, this charming bolthole has a prime position on its stunning sweep of sand.
Built to resemble a traditional fishing village, Maalu Maalu means ‘fish fish’, which is also the cry of local fishermen. The resort is a wonderfully rustic-looking collection of timber buildings, with rooms separated out into chalets all facing the ocean, and a swathe of pristine white sand and shallow water before it.
Why we love Maalu Maalu Resort & Spa
-
The resort is right on a picture-perfect white-sand beach lapped by calm turquoise waters teeming with marine life
-
Its design is inspired by that of a traditional fishing village, with charming touches such as a pool bar made from an old boat
-
You can enjoy a foot massage overlooking the beach or a soothingly scented body treatment at the Ayurvedic spa
-
There’s an appealing mix of dining options, whether you have a taste for simply grilled fish or spicy Sri Lankan flavours
Rooms
In keeping with the fishing village theme, all 40 rooms are in little chalets, with two rooms to each chalet. Deluxe Rooms have direct access to the beach while Ocean Rooms and Panoramic Suites share a plunge pool with three other suites. The Ocean Rooms also allow direct access to the beach.
The two-bedroom Panoramic Suite with Attic is a great choice for families, and the children will love their hideaway in the eaves.
Facilities
The resort’s five bars and restaurants offer everything from relaxed seaside lunches to romantic fine dining.
Karadiya
The main restaurant, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, offers authentic Sri Lankan and international cuisine in buffet style with live cooking stations or as set menus.
The White Sands
If you’re a fan of fresh seafood and eating with your toes in the sand, this romantic and intimate lunch-and-dinner venue is for you. Order the catch of the day or try one of the made-to-order Teppanyaki specialities.
Mora
The à la carte dinner-only restaurant is the place to come for a special occasion, with a world of gourmet dishes on the carefully curated menu.
Habala & Ruwala
Two old fishing boats have been turned into a quirky poolside bar (Habala) and eatery (Ruwala) where you can enjoy a cocktail or a delicious snack.
Thora
Open from 4pm until late, this relaxed bar has a full drinks menu and views of the pool, gardens and ocean.
It’s hard to beat the simple delights of just-caught, fresh-from-the-grill seafood served on the beach under thatch at The White Sands.
