With its stylish new look and laidback vibe, this recently upgraded beachside retreat will appeal to couples, friends and families alike.
There’s an appealing lightness to the air at Veranda Grand Baie that gives it universal allure. It starts with the location: on the beach at the entrance to a sheltered teardrop bay that’s just the thing for watersports. Then there’s the harmonious design, indoors and out, which brings together the best of colonial and local styles to create a look dubbed Creole Chic – think white walls, thatched roofs, warm wooden furniture and rustic blue-and-white murals. And within the grounds, densely planted with indigenous greenery, there’s a judicious balance of tranquil corners and livelier spots. Find your peace in the secluded spa with its nature-based therapies, or chill out at the gently buzzing beach bar that’s a stone’s throw from the sleek infinity pool.
Why we love Veranda Grand Baie
-
It is on a sheltered lagoon in a quiet corner of Grand Baie, but just a short stroll or pirogue-taxi ride from the lively centre of the resort
-
The All Inclusive option covers not just meals but also Mauritian-style street-food snacks, picnic baskets and a wide selection of drinks
-
There are plenty of complimentary things to do, from windsurfing to stretching sessions and activities for the younger guests
-
You can enjoy the best of staying in a hotel with the freedom of self-catering if you opt for one of the well-equipped apartments
Rooms
There’s a breezy colonial-meets-Creole elegance to the 95 rooms and apartments created by the use of natural materials such as rattan and pale wood and a soft blue and white palette. The lead-in Apartments have an additional sofabed and small kitchenette, making them ideal for families. Slightly smaller, the Comfort Garden Rooms come in twin or double versions; the more spacious Family Garden Rooms have a separate room with a trundle bed for up to two teens – great for older families. If a waterside location is essential, opt for a Comfort Pool Room, or splash out on a Privilege Room with generous space and added facilities. For guests staying a minimum of seven nights in a Privilege Room, one full day catamaran cruise per stay is included (including an open bar and lunch on board).
Facilities
The two restaurants and two bars provide plenty of variety, with Creole flavours complemented by international dishes – and when you want a change of culinary scene, it’s only a 10-minute walk into the heart of Grand Baie.
Le Food Comptoir
Start the day in the main restaurant with a generous buffet breakfast and soothing lagoon views. Return for lunch and dinner, buffet-style or table d’hôte, featuring international and Mauritian favourites.
Au Grill
Enjoy a relaxing lunch or dinner in the beachside à la carte restaurant, where the menu focuses on the best local seafood, from simple grilled fish to the chef’s catch of the day.
La Varangue
Open from 9am until midnight, this laid-back bar is a relaxing spot for a morning coffee, afternoon cup of tea or something punchier. There’s also a small but well-judged snack menu.
La Crique
The perfectly located beach bar also serves the pool area, so you can lounge by the water with a local-style cocktail and platter of Mauritian fritters gazing out at the sailing boats and windsurfers on the bay.
Dreamy sea views, the sand beneath your feet, and the freshest of fresh seafood make a meal at Au Grill worth paying a bit more for.

For an additional fee, you can head out on a rental bicycle or play a round on one of two championship courses at Heritage Golf Club.

There’s a strong focus on sustainability throughout the Veranda group, and Grand Baie is no exception. The gardens are filled with native plants and fertilised with natural products, recycling covers everything from paper to cooking oil, and it supports island projects such as Foodwise Mauritius, which redistributes surplus healthy food to those in need.
