The Elgin is the oldest heritage hotel in Darjeeling. While much has changed around the hill town, at The Elgin you still get a feeling of yesteryear.
The Elgin Hotel is something of an institution in Darjeeling. It was built in 1887 and was the former summer residence of the Maharaja of Cooch Behar. Over its 135-year-old history, it’s played host to dignitaries and celebrities. It lies at the heart of Darjeeling making it an ideal base for exploring ancient monasteries, the nostalgic Himalayan Railway and the surrounding valleys and pine forests. After exploring, there is a spa offering stress-relieving massages. The Elgin has a wonderful setting, surrounded by fragrant gardens and with views of the Himalayan range. This heritage hotel has been restored to its former colonial glory, with oak floorboards, cosy fireplaces and Burmese teak furniture.
Why we love The Elgin, Darjeeling
-
Royalty, celebrities, authors and sports personalities have stayed here before you
-
From some rooms, you can see the snow-capped Kanchenjunga mountains while others overlook the meandering gardens
-
They only use fresh leaf tea from local plantations accompanied by exquisite cookies, finger sandwiches, pastries and scones from their bakery for afternoon tea
-
After dinner in the elegant Orchid Dining Room, gather by the crackling fire for a nightcap

After exploring Darjeeling’s attractions, head to the lounge where afternoon tea is served. The Orchid Dining Room offers a range of European and Asian set menus. End your evening with a visit to the Timber Bar for a nightcap in front of the roaring fire.
After exploring the slopes of Darjeeling and its surrounding mountains, relax tired muscles with a treatment in the spa. Ayurvedic, aromatherapy and Swedish massages, body scrubs and facials are just some of the treatments on offer.
There are plenty of activities including trekking, fishing and lovely walks through the woods where you may see squirrels, wildfowl and a large variety of birds. You can walk through the tea gardens into Darjeeling.
