Kwessi Dunes

Starry skies and desert wildlife

Kwessi Dunes is a sanctuary of tranquillity and solitude deep in the NamibRand Nature Reserve.

Kwessi Dunes is a place where you can completely switch off and immerse yourself in the dramatic desert landscapes. Guests love the bushmen walks, where you can venture into the desert with a local in search of the smaller desert creatures, integral to the ecosystem of the dunes.  Whether you’re relaxing at Kwessi Dunes or on one of the nature drives, you may see desert wildlife, including oryx, Burchell’s zebra, jackals and on occasion big cats.

When you’re not out on the reserve or visiting Sossusvlei, you can relax at the pool or watch the changing colours of the dunes. NamibRand was Africa’s first designated International Dark Sky Reserve. The constellations of the night sky can be observed through the camp’s state-of-the-art telescope or from the privacy of your own stargazer room, completely open to the night desert sky.

Kwessi Dunes is part of NamibRand’s conservation story; the area was farmland until Albi Brückner transformed 200,000 hectares into a reserve, reintroducing native species that had been fiercely hunted and removing fences so animals could migrate freely again. When you stay at Kwessi Dunes, a percentage of your money goes towards conservation projects, reserve maintenance and anti-poaching efforts. The lodge is also entirely powered by solar energy.
