Elephant Bedroom Camp

Where elephants roam free

An unbelievably close experience with elephants in Samburu National Reserve.

Elephant Bedroom Camp offers extraordinary close encounters with wildlife, before you even head off on safari. It is surrounded by doum palms attracting local elephants, and as a result the magnificent animals often frequent the camp day and night. It isn’t uncommon for staff to alert you to make way for a passing elephant! As well as the classic Big Five, Samburu also has its own ‘special five’ animals only to be found north of the Equator. Complete your safari experience the most picturesque way, with sundowners and snacks to the backdrop of a dramatic sunset. With just 14 tents, the atmosphere is authentic and intimate with warm and friendly staff, some of whom have been at the camp since it first opened. Gaze over the stunning views from your deck, angled towards the Ewaso Nyiro River to showcase the landscape, and cool off in the heat with a dip in the miniature plunge pool on your front deck. The comfortable shade of parasols makes breakfasting by the river an easy affair, where you can watch the frolicking monkeys nearby. Settle down to evening meals served by lantern light, with the option to arrange private dinners on your deck, too.

Why we love Elephant Bedroom Camp

  • Elephants are free to move in and out of camp and you’ll often see them when you unzip your tent in the morning

  • The wildlife in Samburu is unique, you might spot some of the Special Five: reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, gerenuk, the Grevy’s zebra and Somali ostrich

  • Breakfast and lunch are often served al fresco on the banks of the river

  • Sundowners are a highlight where you can sip on a Kenyan rum cocktail and watch the sunset over Samburu

Breakfast and lunch are served by the river known as the camp's 'beach restaurant'. You’ll be shaded by umbrellas and dine overlooking the water where you’ll spot animals like giraffe, wildebeest, zebra and impala. Of course, the elephants could be there bathing in the river too. At night, it's a  formal dinner set up under the stars, with a four-course à la carte menu, white tablecloths and candles. Private dinners on your deck can also be arranged.
