Chobe Savanna Lodge

The Namibian camp run by a former flying doctor

Chobe Savanna Lodge is located on the banks of the Chobe River at a remote location in the eastern corner of Namibia.

Overlooking Chobe National Park, the river provides a regular source of water for the large herds of elephants for which the region is famous for. Every morning and afternoon, boat safaris explore the riverbanks in search of wildlife that come down to the floodplains to graze and drink. Hippopotamus, buffalo, lion, leopard and wild dog may be seen. This wonderful setting attracts an abundance of birdlife, particularly when the river is in flood. Storks, ibis and spoonbills are just some of the many species that can be seen on the floodplains.

The main lodge has a lounge, dining area and bar. It is open sided to maximise the incredible vistas of the river and national park beyond. Between the boat safaris, there is a swimming pool set amongst the gardens. Catch and release fishing for tiger fish, tilapia and catfish can be arranged on the Chobe River. For an insight into Namibian life, there are guided visits to nearby communities.

Why we love Chobe Savanna Lodge

  • The journey here is an adventure – you’re met at the border jetty and taken up the river in a boat to a small Namibian Passport building in the woods

  • When the water levels are low enough, you get herds of elephants swimming across to the Namibian side to seek out fresh grass

  • This is a water-based camp so expect boat transfers to remote areas away from the crowds

  • The sunsets here are epic - it’s hard to beat watching the river turn gold at dusk

Chobe Savanna Lodge is in the Eastern Caprivi in the Zambezi province of Namibia
Transfers are by boat from Kasane boat station in Botswana. The journey time is 1 hour
